About us
Working with archives and literary estates, Crumpled Linen Press is a small independent publisher that creates beautiful autograph manuscript facsimiles of great literary works in collectible hardback limited editions.
Manuscripts enlarge our understanding of a writer’s life and work. They capture that magical moment when they first transfered their thoughts to paper, and the changes they made to arrive at the works we know and love.
We aim to bring these manuscripts to a wider audience, beautifully presented as they deserve, and enriched with commentary and interpretation by world-leading scholars.

Introducing the Haunted Archive
During his lifetime, Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) published thirty-four full or fragmentary ghost stories, which were destined to become classics of their kind. Fortunately, over half of the original manuscripts are known to survive in institutional archives or collections.
The Haunted Archive is the first attempt to gather M.R. James’s ghost story manuscripts together in one multi-volume publishing venture. Each volume will cover an individual story and comprise a high quality facsimile of the manuscript itself, supported by extensively annotated transcriptions and contextual scholarly commentary.
The series begins with perhaps the most famous story: ‘Oh, Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad’, in which the unfortunate Professor Parkins experiences a ghostly encounter which shakes the very foundations of his hitherto fixed and rather too complacent belief systems …
